Notes from Show Chairman, Kirby Fong

The Northern California Daffodil Society held the first of its two 2011 spring shows on the weekend of March 5th at Alden Lane Nursery in Livermore, California. The show was early and the season late, but we nevertheless had a respectable turnout. The following is copied from the show report; I have not checked the spelling or the color
codes and may have made some additional errors in retyping the report.

We have a new award in memory of Robert Jerrell donated by Tom Stettner for the best standard pink daffodil. Robert Jerrell was a member of the Northern California Daffodil Society long before I was. He was also a hybridizer, and you can find a few of his cultivars by searching on his name in Daffseek. He was interested in breeding pinks
(among other interests), so it is appropriate for an award in his honor to go to the best standard pink in the show. So here it is. It is Pink Silk 1W-P exhibited by Rosemary Scholz. NCDS thanks Tom Stettner for this award. The connection is that Tom is growing on and naming some of Robert Jerrell’s seedlings.

I will post pictures of the ADS award winners later. If the winner is a single cultivar, I will give its name again. If the winner is a collection, I will not list the cultivars again but will refer you to this show report. In this report, the cultivars in a collection are always listed from left to right starting with the top or back row and working toward the bottom or front row. You’ll have to look carefully at some of the five-stem collections to decide whether they’re two in back and three in front or three in back and two in front. The following report is in the same order as the ADS regional show report form.

The same flower won the Gold Ribbon and the Small Grower Award. The same flower won the Mini Gold and the Mini Rose Ribbons. The same flower won the Intermediate and Rose Ribbons.

The Innovation Medal Itsy Bitsy Splitsy!

The Innovation Medal is sponsored by Brian and Betty Duncan of Northern Ireland, and offered only at ADS national shows.  A special panel of judges, well versed in hybridizing, searches throughout the show and non- competitive displays for a potential winner.  The award is not given if there is not a worthy candidate.  As its name suggests, the award is for cultivars that show innovation or a significant advance in hybridizing. The candidate should be a recent introduction or one that will shortly be introduced.

There was a winner for 2010 was Itsy Bitsy Splitsy 11aY-O hybridized by Harold Koopowitz. Itsy Bitsy Splitsy is a miniature with color.  If you think  about it, you will realize that miniatures as a whole do not have much color beyond white and yellow.  Itsy Bitsy Splitsy can come with one or two florets.

Best Photograph in Show, by Ben Blake

Notes from Show Chairman, Kirby Fong

The first of the Northern California Daffodil Society’s two shows for 2009 was held in Livermore, California March 7 and 8 at Alden Lane Nursery.  NCDS is grateful for the support of nursery owner Jacquie Courtright for letting us hold our daffodil show at her nursery at no charge.

I have not heard about other local daffodil shows in the U.S., but the Livermore show may be the first to offer the new ADS awards for the collection of 24 miniatures and for the 3, 6, and 12 miniature cultivars by the hybridizer.  We actually had entries in all four of these classes including two entries in the collection of 24 miniatures.  Although there was an entry, the ribbon for 6 by hybridizer was not awarded.

Of note, was the large number of miniatures in the show with 70 entries encompassing 254 stems.  Credit for most of the miniatures goes to Harold Koopowitz, Marilynn Howe, and Jon Kawaguchi.

Notes from NCDS President, Bob Spotts

We’ve occasionally talked about the late-developing bloom that is ignored on Saturday’s judging, but on Sunday is possibly the best bloom in the room. In my opinion, it happened again at Livermore.

Kirby Fong exhibited a magnificent ‘Showdown’ to win Best of Show on Saturday morning. On Sunday, there was a stunning bloom of ‘Terminator’ in John Castor’s winning Division 2 collection that would have given the winner a good run then. It had developed over time – it wasn’t brought forward for consideration on Saturday.

How about having a second-day champion?
