Notes from Show Chairman, Kirby Fong

The Northern California Daffodil Society held the first of its two 2011 spring shows on the weekend of March 5th at Alden Lane Nursery in Livermore, California. The show was early and the season late, but we nevertheless had a respectable turnout. The following is copied from the show report; I have not checked the spelling or the color
codes and may have made some additional errors in retyping the report.

We have a new award in memory of Robert Jerrell donated by Tom Stettner for the best standard pink daffodil. Robert Jerrell was a member of the Northern California Daffodil Society long before I was. He was also a hybridizer, and you can find a few of his cultivars by searching on his name in Daffseek. He was interested in breeding pinks
(among other interests), so it is appropriate for an award in his honor to go to the best standard pink in the show. So here it is. It is Pink Silk 1W-P exhibited by Rosemary Scholz. NCDS thanks Tom Stettner for this award. The connection is that Tom is growing on and naming some of Robert Jerrell’s seedlings.

I will post pictures of the ADS award winners later. If the winner is a single cultivar, I will give its name again. If the winner is a collection, I will not list the cultivars again but will refer you to this show report. In this report, the cultivars in a collection are always listed from left to right starting with the top or back row and working toward the bottom or front row. You’ll have to look carefully at some of the five-stem collections to decide whether they’re two in back and three in front or three in back and two in front. The following report is in the same order as the ADS regional show report form.

The same flower won the Gold Ribbon and the Small Grower Award. The same flower won the Mini Gold and the Mini Rose Ribbons. The same flower won the Intermediate and Rose Ribbons.
